        Actually I'm using v8.01PL3, again, don't want to update it if at all
possible.

        Yup, tried one in c:\temp, with the same problem.

        Because of MPLAB5 I've always limited myself to 8 characters, I know 6 is
"supposed" to allow more but I saw "strangeness" when I tried a while ago,
so I've stuck with 8 characters.

        It was working fine before, I can't think of any changes. I haven't even
used MPLAB since the last time it worked. Very annoying. Assembly projects
work fine, every c project has this problem.
