I found that I could mess up a via wire with either a soldering iron (drag technique) or reflow. I guess that means I'm ambidextorous. :') My problem was that occasionally I'd cut the wire too fine and not have enough surface contact with the solder. Any reheat, board flex, cosmic ray, whatever could end up hosing up the joint. I found that some SMT's have a little more clearance than others so if I use really fine wire wrap wire I could make the pads a little larger and bend over the wire. It's still difficult to service these if for some reason you reheated the joint on the back side or get careless with the hot air pencil; so I try to avoid doing it at all. That might change if these via inserts work out. I ordered some samples from Harwin to give it a try. They look like they carry some other neat connectors and have a US office as well. Anyway YMMV... -Dal ----- Original Message ----- From: "Josh Koffman" > Another question...you said you ended up with intermittant vias...how > were you soldering the qfp's on top on those vias? -- http://www.piclist.com hint: The list server can filter out subtopics (like ads or off topics) for you.
