The only problem with this method is that you can end up with intermittant connections that are difficult to track down once you have the smt installed over them. I've ended up having to remove more than a few 100+ pin tqfp's on my prototype boards to fix these. (BTW, Hot air rework is *way* better than anything I've used before doing this.(chipquick, etc...)) I'd like to track down a US source for those via inserts that fit in a mechanical pencil barrel... Anyone have a link?
