Sounds like an excellent idea.

You may want to look at the effect of the large resistance path to a non
zero voltage when the PIC is off though. It MAY do funny things when the PIC
is shut down.

Same applies potentially (pun not intended) to the charged cap but this is
probably less of an issue. You could if you wished discharge it just before
shutdown by setting the ADC pin to a low output.
