The list bounced this message. Quite how this could have looked like a webserver command I don't know but if I rave on like this at the top for a while and repost it then maybe the mail will get through ! ? My GE spiel is ready for public release. Or about as ready as it's going to get at present alas. Russell McMahon ___________________________ I am going to get a decent HTML authoring tool, but for now demands of time meant I had to use Word. Results are pretty bad. Don't do it !!! :-) An interesting learning experience though. Site now has 4 user options Short version of paper "Genetic Engineering in New Zealand - Barriers to Informed Debate" Long version of same Short syncopated "In your face" provocative version as a discussion promoter "I don't believe you - and what do you know anyway?" - refers people to two major references which support my base points. If this version doesn't get people's attention then we haven't got enough common ground to make it worth trying in this lifetime. ___________ 1 minute summary Prof B's paper: - We know heaps - We know only a small part so far - We run long before we can walk. Mousepox paper - We have demonstrated that high risk scenarios are actually real and as little as 1 gene insertion away. (Mousepox "enhancement") The public don't realise that ANY GE procedure has *some* prospect of vvv bad worst case outcomes Our politicians are saying "the scientists won't do it if its not safe" The scientists aren't pointing out that they don't say that. A duty of care has not been exercised. We may well survive the next 10 years essentially intact. We may instead find that we sow nuclear fire in our own croplands (NO -wrong story - that was Footfall :-) ) We may find that we sow, literally, death and bold new diseases into our children's lives. IF we do the scientists won't be at all surprised. They will say - Oh, yes, but that was quite an improbable outcome after all. The populace, dying stage right , will gasp, "Say what?" and expire. The politicians, embunkered, will say, but the scientists said it would be safe.
