Hi Jay,

You are using the transistor in emitter-follower mode to drive a transformer.

Assuming there's a need to do it that way, you need to do something to
limit the output current coming from the PIC, like using a series
resistor, and also to prevent the PIC pin from being pulled negative when
you turn it off. Maybe putting a diode from ground to the emitter of your
transistor.
