I've not any experience with NiMh (yet),
but for my NiCd batteries I load them in about 15 minutes, using 4..5 A,
no heat at all, more energy in it, longer lifetime, works great !
The trick is called "Reflex-loading".
AFAIK, this can also be done for NIMh.
