Smoke, mirrors and an extremely good grasp of how a PC works. They burrow completely under the whole system by inserting code that pre-empts the standard boot sector. Very hard to get rid of too I may add :-). Disk looks like a smaller one to the system and they work some magic unknown to me (but obviously must be logical as it works) that produces the desired result.
