Boringly, it's a long way from magic...

The target is for the software to see the disk drive.  If the BIOS can't
see it, but the software can access it without going through the BIOS, the
problem is still solved.

Partition Magic and Linux are two common examples of software which can use
hard drives which the BIOS cannot understand.
