Last post on this thread: The mc1489 datasheet that I have is from on semiconductor. The hysteresis can be increased significantly by using the compensation pin as input, with a ~7k series input resistor. The datasheet suggests this too (in the application section). This would give a hysteresis of about 7V, suitable for full drive RS232 signals (+/-12V).
