This article is about shipments not market share.
But Olin Lathrop talked about market share not shipments and
not only 8-bit, he mentioned 16-bit microcontrollers earlier
in his post.

So I supposed he stated that "Microchip just pulled into the #1
spot" in entire low-cost microcontrollers (including MSP430)
market. MSP430 and PICs share almost the same market.

And from the point of a developer market considerations should
be applied to architecture, not manufactures, like:
PIC architecture vs MCS-51 architecture market share.
