I give up!

I am spending too much time trying to find the ICs I want in a DIP =
package. Now it is getting to the point where I simply cannot build what =
I want with DIPs.

So what are my options with SMT. I know I could spend hours doing =
searches on SMT and how to use them for onesie-twosie projects, but =
could some of you more experienced people give me a few pratical options =
on making the switch to SMT for the hobbiest?

How do you deal with them for prototyping?

What is currently the easiest method of making printed circuit boards =
for them?

Suggestions, ideas, links welcome.
