I went by the OP's description of it being a 7404 HEX inverter, in which case there would be six inverters. I suppose that if you'd cared to go check out their carrier/dev board (and it's documentation) for the chip, you'd see that they clearly call the DB9 connector an RS-232 interface. Funny, I can't seem to locate any level convertors on the board or in the schematic for it.
