I Googled for SMT techniques for hobbyists. Found a page - sorry I don't have a link - describing a technique for doing reflow soldering in (of all things!) a toaster oven. These guys had it down to a science. They specified the make/model of oven, type of solder paste and four different temperature settings and times that would do the job without frying your board. It was something like: preheat oven to 400 degrees, add board, set to broil for 20 seconds, reduce heat to 300 degrees for 30 seconds, then turn off heat and wait 30 seconds before removing the board. DON'T do this based on what I just said - go find the article if you're interested.
