Kelly, I think what alot of people do is use a current limiting resistor instead of a fuse. A 330 ohm resistor will limit the current to about 15 mA for 5V. It also seems to help with reducing noise from other parts of your system, but I have to admit I really don't know much about electronics either so I can't say much more than that.
