Thanks Peter and all others who replied. I'll look into the boot.ini file business. As far as the concept of when to first send data to the usb port, I'm using the FTDI power enable line to hold off power to my pic circuit until *after* the op system recognizes the connection, in accordance with the usb specs concerning how much power you can take before the connection is established.
