We're using USB/RS232 converters on W2K machines and have had
a problem where if we send data to the converter from the peripheral
before the USB driver has loaded, it refuses to receive any data. The
only way to reset it is to power the converter down/up and since it's
inside the PC, this is a pain. We've got around it by not sending serial
data to the converter until we've seen some data from it. That way we
know the driver has loaded. That's one workaround anyway. I don't
know if the converters use a FTDI chip though.
