I've had the same difficulty before. I've found that you have to create a distinct name for that footprint. When adding a new package, a dialog will come up, asking for the name. I simply add the package type as a suffex. Once done, everything works alright....the variant name shows up in the library under the basic type (if more than one variant exists). example in library editor: variant name 1: TC7660_dip8 variant name 2: TC7660_soic8 This has worked for me, but I'm just getting started with eagle too....
