The default fonts are user configurable in Outlook Express. You can change it going to Tools/Options/Mail Format/Fonts (I am doing an "on the fly" translation from my spanish OE version here, I hope there are little or no differences with the english version). You must select a fixed pitch font (like Courier) to properly see the text schematics. By the way, I've missed the beginning of this thread, but I recently had serious problems trying to find the reason why my 16F877 keep resetting. Finally it was a RS2 buffer related problem: some noise in the RS2 input signal corrupted the (packet) data, and the input routine keep growing the buffer... The access to the buffer was through the FSR register, and this way let (in some very strange situations) write a 0 in the PC register! Thats a software reset. I think that there is a "default font" that gets used whenever the message lacks any specific font information, as is (should be) the case with "plain text" mails. Note that "plain text" means "no font", a "rich text" or "HTML" mail could have a specific "Courier" font specified. Jan-Erik.
