That wiring style is called "knob and tube" because sometimes they use ceramic tubes to go through wood members. The insulation on knob and tube wiring is atrocious, and also is nearly 100 years old now. The good news is, the tubes make really keen knife sharpeners when you take all the wiring out and replace it with modern Romex. -- Lawrence Lile x "Alan B. The wiring was all mounted on ceramic standoff insulators with the power and return about 3 inches apart on separate standoffs.
