One more tip: If there is any chance of more than 5v having contact with parallel port (from fault etc) it is best to use a card-based parallel port rather than an onboard. It's better to blow a card than a motherboard. If you have any ISA slots you can use an ISA IO card which were common on 286, 386 and older 486 systems (just set jumpers for disable HDD, FDD and to set Parallel port to LPT2 - best to choose one which has jumper settings printed on it).
