I can never understand these Schematics done with text! Maybe Outlook Exp.
changed them. THe emmitter is connected to ground and a resistor connects
from the collector to the + supply.

I want to change the zero crossing detection circuit to what you have
suggested. Can you tell me whether the circuit shown below is functionally
similar what you have described?
