OK, my "some sort of amplifier" would have a gain of less than one! :-) I didn't really mean amplifier as such, but a circuit to supply the current through the mic, then to pass on only the AC component at the right level for the audio input. I think this is a "little knowledge is a dangerous thing" item for me so I'll quit while I'm only a little behind!
