Another way of somewhat balancing is to use NRZ and allow to send X number of consecutive hi or low, and whwen X is reached the sender inserts a dummy bit of opposite polarity.  As also the reciever is aware and counts to X it now expects the dummy bit and ignores it.
This give high bitrate and enough "balance" for most applications.

IIRC, CAN does this on the physical level, with X=5.
