In most cases it is not conomical to make a separate PCB for just that.
Too much empty PCB area at the back that could be used to squeeze the
rest of the circuit in. For some numbers of digits (1 obviously, but
also 2, 3, 4) you can buy displays that have only the connections you
mention.
