Thanks for the info Jeremy.  I am not too worried about the differences in
transmitters out there.  I am planning on using Futaba only and no I don't
plan on building a transmitter.

There isn't any publicly available (on the Internet, etc.) information out
there describing the signal used by RC radios?  Since you can go out and
purchase something like a Hitech radio and use it with just about any Tx you
would think information about them all is well known.

My other burning question is can you build a receiver without any coils or
other RF type circuitry?  In the snapshot of an existing product that uses
the PIC (http://users.joplin.com/~bselman/rffs100.htm) there does not appear
to be any RF circuitry and the crystal seems to be connected directly to the
PIC?

  This question will actually require you to do much digging.  The first
question should be what transmitter are you going to use.  Since Futaba,
AirTronics, JR and the others do not use the same method to communicate (you
can see this by using 2 radios on the same channel, moving your throttle up
on one may cause the other to wag the rudder or some silly stuff).  Once you
know this you can move forward rather easily.  A simple crystal oscillator
based on the appropriate crystal set for your radio can be found in any
basic electronics book and then its just a matter of decoding the data
stream and driving the appropriate servos.

Contact the dealer of your radio of choice, and have a heart attack at the
price they want for the com spec, then start dissecting an existing
receiver.  Break out your scope and signal analyzer to see how it is
communicating.  Don't bother trying to build your own transmitter.  The
requirements from the FCC are very strict and they don't play around.

I have been doing some digging to find some information needed to start a
new project to build a RC (radio control) FM modulation receiver for use
with 72 MHz aircraft frequencies based on one of the new PIC nanowatt chips.
I have come up with very little on the subject.  Has anyone run across any
relevent articles in the web or in this list that may help me?  An example
of an existing product can be found at
