There have been proprietry extensions made by various manufacturers to get more speed, 3Com/USR did it to 802.11b to get 22Mbps speeds, there was also a manufacturer that got 72Mbps, but since they are proprietary they only worked at the higher speeds when using that manufacturer's hardware, so they've pretty much disappeared.
