For higher data rates, you need a photodiode. The best phototransistors have 5 us rise and fall times and that's with a big input signal.It's true, you can get a big signal if you feed it with a fiber optic cable. Since you have high power RF nearby, would a free space link be suitable for your ap? Since you are writing the code for the PIC yourself, the free space link might be the way to go...especially if you don't need high data rates. Ebay has the parts for this if you decide to use a free space link. I once saw a television transmitter that had control functions (in/out) via an IR LED/PD 2 way link. It was set up like this for high RF immunity and the entire transmitter end floated at 25 KV. A device similar to a hand held tv remote control unit worked great.
