I used a 2.5" HD and no 12V (at least not for the HD portion).

Yes, but a well-protected DC-DC converter can also work well.

Yes ... www.national.com , find "Webench" and let it design the circuit f=
or=20
you.  IIRC, the LM2588 in boost configuration will work for you, but this=
=20
would also depend on how much current you need.
