Though rather late, my brain has finally connected this with a friend's
ongoing project.

They are using the device here (http://www.pjrc.com/tech/mp3/) along
with an adapter (http://k9spud.com/vwcdpic/) to put an MP3 player into
their VW Beetle.

It is in the functional state currently, and they report that it's sound
is better than the CD Player in the car.
