For suitable/cheap cable, look for someone working in a military shipyard. With a tiny nick in the jacket, they will throw away a 500 foot piece that is only slightly used. Or, in some cases they throw away a new piece of cable because the installers were sloppy and damaged it as they installed it. Just make sure it's rated for water intrusion. This is not trivial! By the way, shape your device like a torpedo and put a slight downturn on the fins. This will encourage the sensor to dive and you won't have to make it heavy! I think you can find pictures on the internet of sonar buoys designed to be towed at a mile or more behind the ship. Since sonar is active, the towed sonar array could be a decoy (to have the enemy target the decoy) or it could be an actual active unit. In any case, you get an idea of how to shape your towed sensor. Regards, Art -- http://www.piclist.com hint: The list server can filter out subtopics (like ads or off topics) for you.
