Smart batteries have a limit to their ability to deliver and accept a charge, due to the current sense resistor that is required. They MUST NOT be discharged too low or their internal chip will stop running and its calibration info, battery type, etc is forever lost. The D35, for example, was rated at a max of 3A when in fact it could deliver over 8A easily with just cells alone; but a heavy discharge will overheat and damage the I-sense resistor. Another thing about smart batteries: the cells are handpicked to match when the pack is put together. This ensures long lifetimes when the cells are treated right.
