I paid GBP 160 because I wanted a Windows/Linux multiplatform license. ISTR it's GBP 150 if you just want a Windows (or Linux) license. > I use Easytrax (which is free) instead. I'd love to see Eagle being > cheaper... Easytrax is nice, Autotrax is much better, but the autorouter is crap. Eagle uses a grid-based rip-up router. Put it this way - Protel's router kicks one ass. EAGLE's router pulls out a minigun and lays waste to swathes of ass. It's still not perfect, but it's pretty damn close. > The best of all STILL is Circad. I love Protel - I still use it for boards I'm planning to sell for profit. I can't use Eagle because I signed a license agreement with CADSOFT that stated that unless I had a full license, I couldn't distribute the .PCB and .SCH files for profit, nor could I sell hardware that was designed using the non-profit version of EAGLE. > Phil. | Acorn Risc PC600 Mk3, SA202, 64MB, 6GB, > philpem@dsl.pipex.com | ViewFinder, Ethernet (Acorn AEH62), > http://www.philpem.dsl.pipex.com/ | 8xCD, framegrabber, Teletext > > Acorn Risc??? WOW! :oD Must be a hell of a puter! ;oD 202MHz Digital Equipment (DEC) StrongARM SA-100 CPU. It's fairly speedy, but it doesn't have a floating-point coprocessor. Even a 486DX2-66 outruns it in a floating point test. In terms of raw speed, it's roughly equivalent to a Pentium-166, but the software tends to be written much better - very little space is wasted. Impression Publisher (desktop publishing software) comes on seven floppy discs, 8MB installed IIRC. RiscPCB (PCB design package) is free and clocks in at less than 1MByte. The Viewfinder, BTW, is an enhanced graphics card. A "stock" RiscPC can't output 1600x1200 in 16 million colours - the ViewFinder can. It's basically an ATI Rage128 stuck to an adapter card. Flash-upgradeable firmware, too. :) Did I mention that RISC OS comes with a fairly powerful vector graphics program (Draw) built into the operating system ROMs? See www.castle.org.uk and www.riscos.com for more info on RISC OS (if you want it) :) I've done 90% of the design work for my projects with nothing more than Draw and RiscPCB for the past year. I'm starting to think about going back to EAGLE, if only because of the autorouter and its (quite nice) user interface.
