Assuming it is a production thing, then surely time and effort involved in modifying the LED displays would make it more worthwhile just using a PIC with more IO. How about having a single transistor or something connected between the common DP line, the common pin for the digit on which you want the DP lit, and Vcc... So that the DP line is only asserted when the common for that segment is driven.
