Hmm. I'd been told that there are a few of the higher end adapters had true RS232 in them, so should work if you were to have a programmer that was externally powered. My funds are limited, so I have yet to experiment with it in hopes it would work. But, now that I think about it, if my funds weren't limited, I would just buy the "real thing" from Microchip.
