I would guess that it depends mostly on what chip
*Microchip* would like *you* to buy. And Microship probably do
*not* want you to buy the 16F84, if you don't *have* to.
They want you to use the chips that stand up best
against the competition.

And at the same time, they can squeeze out as much money
as possible from those that *must* buy the 16F84.

It's called "marketing", b.t.w.   :-)
