I agree, and in fact this is how I normally do my projects (PIC's spread near the hardware, and a central Linux PC comunicating with all). In fact, one of the advantages of using PIC's (or other microcontroller) in the "remote" places is that in case of comunication failure, a controlled condition can be ensured (ie., stop movement, de-energizing areas, etc.).
