Reading or writing the port will not clear GPIF, you need to do that by clearing the bit. You do however need to read the port to clear the mismatch condition. If you don't, you may run into problems - I know, I have encountered them. I don't remember off hand whether it was a constant interrupt or never getting the interrupt, but it was definitely a problem solved by simply reading the port before going into SLEEP mode.
