What limitation was this?  I have to admitt that I've hardly used the 16/17
PIC C compiler since I switched to the 18 series, but had no major issues
last time I used it on a project.

I have had no first hand experience but I have heard good things about the
IAR compiler ( http://www.iar.com/ ) and the Bytecraft compiler (
http://www.bytecraft.com/mpccaps.html )
