Diffuse: If you are outside the intended viewing angle you might still
be able to see that it was on by looking directly at it
Clear: If you are outside the viewing angle you can't really tell if
it's on just by looking at it.

If you need a really wide viewing angle, then diffuse can often be seen
well outside the designed viewing angle.  If you know that the display
is always going to be viewed from the front or within the viewing angle,
then diffuse can be brighter.
