We use the TSOP1140 with a 16F676 for a BASIC Stamp wireless IR programming system, and it works exceptionally well at over 65' for remote Stamp programming up to 2400bps. We use the Vishay TSOP7000 with 870nm High-Speed IR emitters for serial data links up to 19,200 using a 12F629 to generate the 455KHz carrier. Also very reliable. If you need serial IR, Vishay parts are the ticket.
