I'm encountering the problem only on my WinXP computer. I've installed
Visual Basic on it. The program runs just fine from within Visual
Basic but fails when I compile to EXE and execute it. (On my laptop
[Win98se], the same compiled program runs fine as an EXE file as well
as from within Visual Basic.).

I suppose that it's possible for different files to be used in the
Visual Basic versus standalone mode of operation. I'll take a look at
that.

The fact that my program executes correctly in one case tells me that
I'm at least doing something right. I just can't make heads nor tails
of what the difference could be.
