I'm not sure you over-there (US/CAN) have heard about the story about the Euro and Thai currency. Shortly after the introduction of the Euro in 10+ European countries, the local money exchangers in Tailand (I think is was) saw an increase in interest in one of the "smallest" Thai coins. The answer was that that coin was more or less exactly the same weight and size as one of the Euro coins (of higher value, of course) and the Thai coin was used in vending automats in Europe...
