But surely compression is done in memory, so the data
written to disk is compressed, and this reduces disk I/O
by the same amount as storage-space.  Obviously
processor power is needed to do it, but is that a
problem?  As I understand it, most servers have plenty
of CPU cycles to spare.

Agreed!  Infact, pruning all irrelevant content from
replies is a Good Thing!
