What sort of accuracy do you need? If you can deal with stepped accuracy,
then I would be tempted to try a stepped Perspex or similar plastic rod, and
shine an LED down it and measure the reflected light. This would seem
preferable to me as you are dealing with a foodstuff, and this is a good way
of having a non contact sensor in a liquid.
