Yahoo lists DO support attachments, but I, and most other moderators, turn off that feature because there are just too many idiots running their computers without GOOD antivirus software. With attachments turned off the worm/virus has great difficulty propagating via the list. IF people want the ability to post with attachments, it's all of 15 seconds to turn it back on. I'll take a poll if enough people sign up to piclistmit. I've always figured that any binary worth having is worth the trouble of uploading it to a specific site so that only those interested in getting it need to to consume bandwidth getting to it. Include the files URL in your post to the list to make it a painless exercise. On the subject of Microchip hosting the list, look at Motorola. They moved ALL their official lists onto Yahoo back in March 2002. The posting rate has dropped a bit, but they realized that they are in the business of selling chips, NOT running mailing lists. The lists are NOT listed in the Yahoo directory, which makes them harder for spammers to find. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/m68hc11/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/68hc12/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/68hc16/ If Microchip were officially hosting the list, would they be able to keep their hands off controversial threads? If you own the server, the temptation to 'edit' the archives becomes irresistible, particularly if you're getting slammed for STUPID bugs or poor customer support. I know that people are resistant to change, but if you don't sign up to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PIClistMIT/ how will you know where the piclist went if it suddenly gets shut down? I delete irrelevant posts so 'test messages' won't be left in the archives. And another point, mailman doesn't support subject tagging, like this list does. The only option is for the user to filter their mail based on the tag, or for us to have more than one list. e.g. piclistot, piclistee, piclistpic, piclistadmin. They are trivially easy to set up in yahoo so that is one way to get back the functionality we will loose when MITVM shuts down. As a list admin experienced with several different lists' software, I know where -I- would like to move the list . It's up to you to vote with your subscription.
