You can do with a SSR. Check out International Rectifiers site on SSR apps.
The disadvantages of an SSR compared to a EMR (electro-mechanical relay) are
the increased voltage drop, significant power dissipation at higher currents
(due to say RDSon), off state leakage , and it is difficult to switch small
signals like Audio. Of course the advantages of a SSR are the long life,
reduced EMI/RFI (no contact arcing here) , fast response etc.

is used to keep a piece of equipment on and then used as a reset to turn it
off
and then back on after a delay ? Or would this type of use warrant a relay
