I did exactly this as a young dork of age 13 or so. I really regret it. Soldering is one of the few things that really requires three hands. I never found "helping hands" to be very helpful at all. On a related note, being the (very) poor EE freelancer in an expensive place, my "fume hood" for soldering is a $5 125V box-type fan that is normally used for PC power supplies I nailed to a little block of wood. Very low airflow, just enough to keep solder smoke drifting out of the way. Am I kidding myself, or is this enough? I don't do "production" level soldering, but there have been some 15hrs+ weeks. Opinions?
