I've got a Linux system running the network at home. The Windows boxen have all current security patches installed and are about as stable as the average one-legged chair. OTOH, running Linux, XFCE and VNC on them turns them into very stable CAD workstations. I've had EAGLE (CadSoft's PCB layout system) running on a Linux box over VNC before.
