Hi Mark, Which FTDI drivers did you install? The VCP (Virtual COM port) or D2XX (Direct DLL) versions? - I recommend the VCP ones to get started with. Firstly uninstall whatever FTDI drivers are installed now, and restart W98. Then, plug in your FT232 board. What should happen (under W98) is that windows starts the 'New hardware dialogue', you say, 'install from a specific location' and browse to your copy of the VCP drivers, which then install OK because the driver inf file entries for VID & PID matches the VID & PID held on the FT232 which default to VID=0401 and PID=6001. If this process does not work, I'd be looking at the FT232 circuitry surrounding USBDM / USBDP, and the 6Mhz clock. Adding the external EEPROM allows you to program custom VID, PID and Device ID strings, but is not actually required for a basis USB - > RS232 converter. BTW, the FT232BM part replaces the FT8U232AM part, and has quite a few fixes, and is easier to use. I have designed boards using this 'BM' part, and have been very impressed with it. Have downloaded the last FTDI drivers, but no luck. When I connect the USB cable to the device, W98 recognize it but tells me I have an "unknown device". Tried manually updating the driver but W98 finds nothing to upgrade... The hardware seems to be ok. I didn't install an EEPROM. Is it a problem? Thanks for any help.
